Dr. Friedbert Pflüger, former Deputy Minister (State Secretary) in the Ministry of Defence, was born in Hannover on March 6th, 1955. For over two decades, he has held leadership positions in politics, administration, business and academia.
Friedbert Pflüger is partner of GLB as well as managing partner of Pflüger International GmbH in Berlin. He is also partner of other firms such as Kurdish German European Business Alliances (KGE) based in Arbil (North Iraq) and Kimya LLC based in Tehran, Isfahan and Kish Islands.
Friedbert Pflüger is senior advisor of Roland Berger and chairman of the Internet Economy Foundation (IE.F).
Since the 1980th he is closely connected to Latin America, in particular through his work with the Christian Democratic Parties in the region. Over the years he has built up an extensive network in business and politics of Latin America.
Since 2009 Friedbert Pflüger is visiting professor for international relations at the Department of War Studies, King‘s College London, where he is director of the renowned European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS). He is also senior fellow of the Atlantic Council, head of the Commodities Workgroup of Atlantikbrücke, member of the Steering Committee of the Arab-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Ghorfa), and member of the International Selection Committee of the EXPO-2017 (Kazakhstan) Energy Best Practices Areas. Between 2012-14, he was member of the Resilien-tech Workgroup of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (ACATECH). Friedbert Pflüger is author and editor of numerous books and publishes zon topics of energy policy, among others in Handelsblatt, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Internationale Politik, Energy Post, Energate, Energlobe, BIZZ energy today and Security Times. He is also regularly invited to speak at international conferences and symposia.
Together with Ambassador (ret.) Janusz Reiter, Friedbert Pflüger heads since 2009 the monthly Energy Dialogues at the Reichstag hosting leading figures from politics and the energy sector. Since 1997, Friedbert Pflüger is member of the German-Indian Advisory Group.
Friedbert Pflüger studied Political Science, Economics and Constitutional Law in Göttingen, Bonn and at Harvard, where he also taught at the Center for International Affairs under the supervision of Samuel Huntington. In 1982, he received his PhD under the supervision of Karl Dietrich Bracher in Bonn with a thesis on American foreign policy (summa cum laude). In addition to his studies, he was chair of the Circle of Christian-Democratic Students (RCDS) and member of the board of the youth organization of the German Christian Democratic Party.
After his studies, Friedbert Pflüger worked for the Berlin Senate Chancellery between 1981 and 1989. Here, he became one of the closest collaborators of Richard von Weizsäcker, first as speechwriter, later as bureau chief and press officer. In 1990, Friedbert Pflüger was elected to the first unified German Parliament, where he was until 2006, among others, chair of the Committee for EU Affairs, Foreign Policy Spokesperson of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group and Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence during the first Merkel Government. For ten years each, he was deputy chair of the CDU of Lower Saxony and Member of the Federal Board and the Executive Committee of the CDU respectively.
Friedbert Pflüger has various voluntary engagements. Among others, he is vice-president of the Inter Dialog Institute for International and Intercultural Dialog e.V., President of the German-Kosovar Business Association, chair of the Friends’ Association of the German School in Arbil, and a member of the managing board ofAgainst Oblivion – For Democracy.
Friedbert Pflüger holds various awards and decorations. He was decorated for his contribution to the Eastern enlargement of the EU and NATO with the Polish, Bulgarian and Lithuanian Orders of Merit and is Commander of the Legion of Honour of the French Republic as well as of the Royal Victorian Order of the United Kingdom.
Friedbert Pflüger lives in Berlin together with his wife, Sibylle Pflüger, and his two children.
